Write to Prince Rainier and
Help Save Elephants' Lives
Every year, Prince Rainier of Monaco hosts the Monte Carlo International
Circus Festival. It is an internationally sponsored event that includes
the suffering of animals, drawing individual acts from circuses all
over Europe and Asia. The circus is viewed as a "glamorous,"
high-society event, and it attracts lots of celebrities. But, animals
forced to perform in the festival are confined to small cages and
trucked in all weather extremes for days or even weeks along winding
roads from all over Europe and Asia to Monaco.
The circus is no fun for animals. Without the use of force, including
whips, chains, muzzles, and bullhooks, it is impossible to train strong
and naturally independent animals to perform circus tricks. Social,
intelligent elephants are kept chained, unable to take even a step
between acts, and they are "broken" by being beaten. Bears
are usually muzzled, declawed, and defanged and can have their front
paws burned to train them to stand on their hind legs. They "dance"
because they remember a stick being smashed on their toes. The big
cats are naturally afraid of fire, and a whip must be used to force
them to jump through flaming hoops.
Prince Rainier is directly involved with the organization of the International
Circus Festival. Please ask Prince Rainier to keep animals out of
the circus this year by completing the following small project.
1. Paste a playing card onto the front of a 5"x7" index
card. Address the postcard to:
His Royal Highness
Prince Rainier
The Palace of Monaco
BP518
Monaco-Ville
Monaco 98015
2. Write on the back of the index card:
Dear Prince Rainier,
The circus is cruel to animals. Their housing and training causes
them to suffer. Please don’t gamble with elephants’ lives--
allow only human performers in the International Circus this year.
If you like, you can be creative with what you write, but please be
sure to include the sentence: "Please don’t gamble with
elephants’ lives."
3. Take your postcard to the post office with 60 cents and say you
want it air-mailed overseas to Monaco.
You can help stop the suffering of elephants, tigers, and other animals
abused in the name of "entertainment." Click
here to support PETA's vital work.
