Rudy
At just 3 years of age, Rudy was shipped out for a grueling life on the road for the circus's 2005 season. It wasn't long before things turned tragic. According to whistleblowers, Rudy and another elephant, Angelica, became frightened while performing in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in December 2005. The elephants ran amok inside the arena, and Rudy allegedly suffered a long bone-deep gash during the incident. The trainer involved, Pat Harned, is the same man seen in a 1999 videotape obtained by PETA in which a 4-year-old elephant named Benjamin drowns. In March 2006, the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed that it has opened an investigation to determine whether the circus is in violation of the federal Animal Welfare Act.
