Important Victory for Animals

On March 12, the Hawthorn Corporation was ordered to relinquish custody of 16 elephants to USDA-approved facilities, as well as pay a $200,000 fine. This victory would not have been possible without your valuable support, but there is still much work to be done for the thousands of other animals confined and abused in the name of “entertainment.” Please click here to help PETA work in their behalf.

Delhi is a living example of how the circus industry abuses elephants. While she was in the custody of the Hawthorn Corporation, a company that leases elephants to circuses, her front legs swelled to twice their normal size and she had difficulty walking. She also sustained severe chemical burns to both front legs when the Hawthorn Corporation used undiluted formaldehyde to treat her infected feet.

But thanks to the support of caring individuals, the hard work of PETA, The Elephant Sanctuary, and other groups, Delhi is now the first "circus" elephant to be seized by the United States Department of Agriculture because of cruelty to animals. She will spend the remainder of her days in the company of other rescued elephants at the lush elephant sanctuary in Tennessee, where she has become playful and active and is in good spirits.

How You Can Help

Hundreds of other elephants like Delhi, as well as other animals including bears, tigers, and lions, are still suffering at the hands of the circus industry at this very moment, but PETA's nationwide demonstrations and outreach activities are helping to educate countless people about circus cruelty. Thanks to the support of caring individuals like you, PETA is helping to rescue other abused animals from circuses, working with caring citizens to enact legislation to ban animal acts, promoting animal-free circuses like the spectacular Cirque du Soleil, and more.
