Alaska's First Swim

On April 8, 2002, Alaska was released from quarantine at the Baltimore Zoo. Moments after Alaska emerged into the polar bear exhibit, she ventured into the pool of water and was swimming, diving, playing with balls, attacking a log, splashing, and twirling. She will be a companion to the zoo's lonely male polar bear, Magnet.

Alaska had spent her life being abused by a traveling tropical circus. At PETA's urging, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service launched an investigation into Alaska's origin. On March 6, 2002, the agency confiscated Alaska from the Suarez Bros. Circus after determining that the circus had supplied fraudulent documents in violation of an international treaty and federal law.
